What emotion is your subconscious hiding? According to the late Aristotle, we have nine basic categories of emotion, the combination of which make up the rich tapestry of human feeling we all experience. The first is anger, which is known by everyone and is a real sneakster. The second is friendship, which wikepedia kindly explains via its opposite, enmity. That clears it right up. The third, fear, has been felt by anyone who has looked down to see an empty toilet paper roll the first time they go to their date’s house.
Fourth, we have shame. An oldie but a goodie. Responsible for countless hilarious photos and videos involving dogs and shit they’ve done. Nuff said. Kindness, or benevolence comes next, and is tolerable if done sincerely. Pity, or feeling sorry for someone, is the sixth and is generally awful, both on the receiving end and when it is experienced firsthand. I suppose it has its place, considering it exists. The seventh is indignation, which is apparently “feeling angry because something is not fair”. I am indignant that Aristotle didn’t lump that one in with anger.
Envy, a slightly cooler word than jealousy, mainly refers to the feeling you have when someone has something that is shinier than the thing that you have. Generally comes with repercussions that are less than pleasurable. The last and greatest is love, the emotion that ties us all together and keeps us from destroying each other with a combination of the above listed emotions. I guess you could argue that we are destroying each other, but we are also helping each other and working together to solve the plethora of issues that come with living together on this little rock flying through sweet, blessed space.
