A woman armed with knives was shot by a Washington, D.C. police officer near a fire on Saturday night, police said.
The unidentified woman was in stable condition at a hospital after the standoff nine miles east of the White House, The Washington Post reported. The woman didn’t drop the knives when officers told her to, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier told the newspaper.
An onlooker at the scene on Clay Terrace NE yells at a woman in a pink ball cap to “put the knife down” in a video posted by WRC-TV. One of several officers surrounding her appears to fires his gun at her as the 15 seconds of footage ends.
The woman had moved toward the cops as several other witnesses appeared to tell her to drop the weapon in multiple cell phone videos. Police discovered the woman wearing a mask or goggles and holding several knives when they arrived at the reported fire at around 6 p.m., Lanier told the Post.
The fire department is investigating what caused the blaze on the 5300 block, the newspaper reported. It’s not immediately apparent how the woman may have been involved, the newspaper reported.
