Does one need to be pure in order to be able to judge another’s purity? If so, who among us could be the judge, and what is purity that we would test it in the first place? When it comes to certain things, like chemistry, purity is a scientifically quantifiable property. But when it is used to apply to the intentions or thoughts of a human being, things start to get hazy.
We each observe this world, and each other, through the skewed lens of our own biased perception. We are shaped by our experiences, a constant flux made up of the new experiences of the moment combined with all those of our storied past. From the moment we are conceived, the experiences begin shaping us into who we seem to be and how we interpret new experiences. Part of that interpretation is the constant stream of judgment we must take part in for our successful maneuvering in this fast paced world.
I don’t mean that we must judge each other to survive, but there is necessary judgment in the discrimination between what is good for us and what is not. Without judgment, how would we decide what to eat, what to wear, which business decisions to make, or how to choose from the million options we are faced with every day. Due to the exponential, unprecedented change we are fortunate enough to be a part of, we are forced to make more and more decisions in less and less time. Judgement makes that possible.
That same wealth of information and life experience makes us incapable of accurately judging each other morally, which brings us back to the original question. Can anyone judge another’s purity? There’s only one way to find out: take the purity test!
