Over thousands of years, humans have evolved skills which are necessary in order to read and interpret other people’s emotions. Some individuals are much more adept than others at figuring out what a person is thinking just by looking at them. The easiest way to pick up on someone’s mood is to examine their face. Each different attitude or emotion that a person feels inside is often manifested outwardly through their facial features. Clues often lie in how one’s eyes, mouth, brow and so on appear, and by looking at them we can better tell if they are relaxed and happy or contorted and upset. Even when someone says they are fine and appears at ease, their eyes may be narrowed, burning, and intense, which tells a different and contrary story.
Often when we know someone very well or intimately we are able to pick up on minute details that others would overlook or think nothing of. Perhaps it’s a twitch, averting one’s eyes, an odd smile, or some other behavior, that intuitively tells you the person is acting amiss and something’s up. Such type of behavior cues are learned over time and through exposure to that person. However, more often than not we are thrown into social situations and interactions with strangers. This forces us to be able to quickly judge what they are feeling, so we can respond appropriately, and make the interaction as comfortable as possible for all involved.
When it comes down to basics, we both consciously and unconsciously pick up on overt and subtle visual cues, and thus how we perceive emotions in others is very much a mental process.
