The Rorschach test is an objective and standardized measure of behavior in which a person’s perception of inkblots are analyzed with psychological interpretation, complex algorithms, or both. Also called the Rorschach test, the Rorschach technique, or just the inkblot test, the evalutation was created in 1921 by a Swiss psychologist, Hermann Rorschach. During the 1940s and 1950s, Rorschach’s test was the basis of clinical psychology.
By judging what patients see in the inkblot pictures, psychologists examine personality characteristics and emotional functioning. It has been found to be especially useful in cases where the patient is reluctant to openly speak about their thoughts. It is believed that Rorschach modeled the test after a popular game of his time called Blotto, which involved making poetic associations or charades to inkblots that could be purchased in stores at the time.
Rorschach used about forty inkblots when he was first studying the idea, and later narrowed it down to fifteen. When he was in the process of having his worked published, he was forced to choose only ten images due to printing costs. These ten blots, some black and white, some with color, went on to be the standard for the assessment. They often generate the same responses from different individuals, although information is revealed when a person goes beyond the basic labeling of an image to project details of their self or of their life.
