Out of all of the many awesome things about Halloween, one of the best parts is the candy and all of the delicious treats that are special made and served at parties. People tend to go all out with their tasty creations this time of year and make really cool decorated cookies, candy apples, cotton candy and marshmallow ghosts, and so on. If you want to compete with the best, you have to stand out and make something awesome. These homemade gummy worms are perfect for adding a creepy touch to your Halloween spread. They look, feel, and taste great on their own and when they are incorporated into other recipes they automatically upgrade the dish to the next level. YouTube channel Todd’s Kitchen shows how to easily scare up a bunch of the green, slimy crawlers just in time for Halloween. They may look complicated to make, but anyone can pull these treats off.
Start off with 2 cups of boiling hot water and place it into a mixing bowl. Add a packet of strawberry jelly and three 10 gram packets of gelatin. Mix them all together until it looks like everything is completely dissolved and let it sit for approximately 30 minutes so that it cools down to room temperature. Grab some flexible straws, the type with the top neck part that extends and bends, and pull on them so that they all extend out. Take a rubber band and bound them tightly all together, then stick them in a container so they are standing up straight. Try to find as thin of a container as you can possibly get so that the straw bundle fits snugly inside of it.
Take your gelatin mixture and add in about half a cup of thickening cream and 15 drops of green food coloring. Gently stir it all together, being careful not to over-mix. Pour the green liquid over and into the straws so that they are about halfway filled. Place the straws into the freezer for 20 minutes then take them out and finish filling them with green liquid. Doing the straw filling in stages will allow the gelatin to set and firm up slightly, that way it traps more of the liquid inside the straws the second time around. Place them in the freezer for 3 hours, remove, and take the straws out of the container. Peel off the green gelatin around the outside bottom of the straws and discard it. Separate the straws and place them under warm water for about 2-3 seconds, no more no less. This helps loosen the gelatin inside the straws so that it’s easier to remove. Now take one end of the straw and pinch it, squeeze down, and the green slime should easily slide right out.
The bright green gummy worms will look just like real ones and the straws even give them the ridges that worms have. They also jiggle around and feel just like creepy crawlers but taste a lot more yummy! You can do a lot of creative things with these edible worms. One idea is to crush up Oreo cookies and mix it in, or crumble it on top of, chocolate ice cream to make dirt. Then add in the slimy worms and make some fake tombstones to create a graveyard. Whatever you end up doing, everyone form kids to adults will love them!
