Millions of people will tune in tonight to watch the crystal ball drop in Times Square and countdown the final seconds of 2015. As soon as the ball reaches the bottom and everyone says “happy new years!,” the confetti will begin to rain down upon all the revelers gathered below. The sight of millions of tiny pieces of paper fluttering through the brightly lit city skies is awesome to behold. It’s part of what makes the whole scene so special and it’s a spectacular way to ring in the new year.
Scattered in among the 25 million or so plain pieces of tissue paper are hundreds of thousands of wishes. Every year, people who stop by the Times Square Visitor Center are extended the opportunity to write down a wish of theirs on a piece of paper. It can be whatever they want or most desire to happen in the upcoming year whether that be world peace, good health, a personal goal, or to win the lottery. All of the brightly colored strips of paper are collected and stockpiled before they are added to the one ton of total confetti that gets dropped and released into the Manhattan sky at 12:00:01 midnight on January first.
So when you watch the ball drop tonight and the confetti begins to fall, know you’ll be watching thousands of people’s wishes flying through the air. Anyone on the streets below can literally reach up and grab a wish out of thin air! It makes watching the celebrations all the more interesting, and a little more special, to know that.
