Mail carriers are used to dealing with all sorts of scenarios when it comes to the many people and animals they encounter on their routes. Most of the time it’s aggressive dogs they have to be careful around and many a mailman carries treats on them at all times. The tasty biscuits not only make them appear more welcome and non-threatening, they also work to momentarily distract dogs while they go about making their delivery. For one mailman the issue he faces daily is not dogs, instead it’s wild turkey related.
The unnamed US Postal employee works on Cape Cod delivering mail in the town of Falmouth, Massachusetts. It’s there on the streets where he comes face to face with “The Turkey Gang of Falmouth,” which is the nickname locals have bestowed upon a roving group of wild turkeys. Every single day the birds stalk and follow the carrier from house to house, making it necessary for him to carry a big stick that he uses to keep them at bay with.
One onlooker recently filmed the strange sight and the video has since gone viral, racking up over a million views already. In it up to 5 turkeys can be seen aggressively running behind the mailman while he holds out the long pole to fend them off. At one point in the clip someone can be heard muttering “every day” and it’s likely in relation to how often the poor guy has to deal with this kind of behavior. The sight is definitely weird and strangely entertaining, but it works best to highlight some of the crazy stuff mailmen have to regularly put up with.
According to reports, the wild turkey population has drastically shot up in Massachusetts. The ones in Falmouth have learned to deal with people and the busy streets in town. Oftentimes they hang out near the public library and the only person they seem to be bothering is the mailman. The locals have gotten used to their presence and have grown fond, even protective, of the wild birds.
